Eero Aarnio – Designer of Modern Finnish Furniture

Eero Aarnio is recognized as one of the leading modern furniture designers in the world. He was born in Helsinki in 1932 and later studied at the Institute of Industrial Arts. Aarnio is considered an important pioneer particularly for his use of plastics in furniture design. Plastics, he discovered, allowed for great flexibility and innovation in the creation of exciting new organic and zoomorphic forms that could be fun, functional and ergonomic, an interesting new concept. And, plastics offered many vibrant color choices and ease of maintenance. His furniture can be enjoyed inside and outside; and surprisingly, some even float. Several of his novel innovations like the BALL (1963), PASTIL (1968) and BUBBLE CHAIR (1968) have become pop culture icons. Representative designs of his are included in prominent museums such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Embassy of Finland in Washington, D.C. U.S.A. featured an exhibition titled POP FANTASIES: FURNITURE DESIGN BY EERO AARNIO in 2005. To learn more about Eero Aarnio go to www.eeroaarnio.com.
